If you missed my conversation with Madeline McIntosh, the publisher of Authors Equity, you have until Thursday to watch the replay.
Self Care fans: I went on
’s Jewish Angle podcast to talk about the explosive Facebook tell-all Careless People, which Phoebe thought beared uncanny resemblence to my fictional satire. I told the hilariously true story of what happened when my feminist nonprofit secured a meeting with Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In foundation to ask for funding.
Over the past several years, I’ve been writing an 80,000-word novel about the relationship between content creators and their fans. Becoming “known” has never been easier, but mainstream fame is elusive. The media gatekeepers that could once “make” a star are now covering the stars that made themselves.
Social media has allowed famous people to reveal their lives directly to their fans. They don’t need Rolling Stone. Rolling Stone needs them.
Fans are aware of their power. They stay up all night waiting for the album drop, they buy the sprayed edges special edition, they book the plane ticket, and in return, they want access. They want content. They want to publish (and read) entire novels on the internet dedicated to romantic storylines between fictional characters. I thought I was observing all this from a cool distance, until I read Joan Didion’s latest book from Knopf, in spite of my conflicted feelings about its publication, and observed a shameful sense of entitlement to justify my reading: I’m her fan! Don’t I deserve access to these pages?
I’m not famous, but I’ve become known, among other writers, for my content.
With my own book coming out in a little over three months, I have started to realize just how many writers are watching me, to see what I’ll do next.
For diamond medallion members, who pay for exclusive access to what I’m thinking, here’s an update on my publicity and marketing, about three months out from my pub date. I’ll show you how long I’ve been working on my marketing campaign and give you specific takeaways you can implement in your own book launch campaigns.
